National Dialogue Conference for the Syrian Private Sector Launches in Damascus to Shape the Country’s New Economic Vision
As a step aimed at shaping the features of Syria’s new economy, the National Dialogue Conference for the Syrian Private Sector was launched in Damascus. The event was organized by the Ministry of Economy and Industry in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and with support from the Government of Japan, with broad participation from ministers, officials, private-sector representatives, and experts.
Minister of Economy and Industry Dr. Nidal Al-Shaar emphasized the importance of building a modern economic and legislative model based on a genuine partnership between the state and the private sector. He explained that the state’s role is to formulate policies and legislation and ensure stability, while the private sector leads investment, production, and innovation. He also stressed that public assets belong to the people and are not subject to privatization, while adopting a guided free-market economy that preserves the state’s social role.
For his part, Japan’s Ambassador to Syria, Akihiro Tsuji, affirmed that the private sector is the main driver of economic recovery and job creation, reiterating his country’s commitment to supporting the Syrian economy.
Meanwhile, UNDP representative Dr. Rouhi Afghani called for the formulation of a new economic and social contract focused on sustainable development, investment in infrastructure and the digital economy, and strengthening regional integration.
In a statement on the sidelines of the conference, the President of the Damascus and Rural Damascus Chamber of Industry, Engineer Mohammad Ayman Al-Mawlawi, stressed the importance of enhancing dialogue between the government and the private sector and involving it in the drafting of economic legislation and decisions in a way that supports the reconstruction phase and improves the investment environment
