ILO and Damascus Chamber of Industry Discuss Wage Standards and Social Insurance in Syria
The International Labour Organization (ILO), in cooperation with the Damascus and Rural Damascus Chamber of Industry, held a focus discussion session on promoting decent work and pay equity. The session was attended by Dr. Mazen Dirowan, President of the Federation of Syrian Chambers of Industry, and Eng. Muhammad Ayman al-Molawi, Secretary of the Federation and President of the Damascus Chamber of Industry, along with representatives from the chambers of commerce, agriculture, and tourism.
Consultant Dr. Rasha Serop presented an overview of ILO Conventions No. 100 and No. 131 regarding minimum wage fixing and equal remuneration for work of equal value. The discussion touched upon building a knowledge base to reform the current wage system and enhancing tripartite social dialogue between the government, employers, and workers.
Participants discussed wage calculation mechanisms and the impact of social insurance contributions on production costs and competitiveness. Employers' representatives emphasized that wages are determined by supply, demand, and expertise, warning that an excessive minimum wage could increase unemployment. They also called for reducing social insurance rates to encourage full compliance. The meeting concluded with the announcement of a survey to collect accurate data on wages and their impact on production costs across all sectors
