Enhancing Occupational Safety and Mental Health at the Ninth Annual Conference in Damascus

Emphasizing the role of the industrial sector in strengthening workplace stability, the Damascus and Rural Damascus Chamber of Industry participated in the opening of the Ninth Annual Conference on Occupational Safety and Health, held at the National Library in Damascus under the patronage of Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Hind Kabawat. The event was organized by the General Organization for Social Insurance in cooperation with the General Federation of Trade Unions and the Chamber of Industry.

The conference coincides with the World Day for Safety and Health at Work and is held under the theme “Ensuring a Psychosocially Healthy Work Environment,” highlighting the importance of mental health alongside physical safety in the workplace.

The opening ceremony was attended by several officials and representatives of public and labor entities, including the Chairman of the Chamber of Industry, Mohammad Ayman Al-Moulawi, Director General of the Social Insurance Organization Hassan Khatib, and Ministry representative Hamad Barkal, along with representatives from trade unions and the business community.

In his speech, Al-Moulawi stressed that workers are the foundation of the production process, noting that ensuring their physical and mental well-being is a strategic investment that enhances productivity and quality. He also called for integrating safety practices into daily operations and expanding training programs to raise awareness of occupational risks.

Hassan Khatib highlighted that the concept of occupational safety has evolved to include psychological and social dimensions, emphasizing that a supportive work environment helps reduce burnout and workplace accidents. He added that the institution’s role extends beyond compensation to promoting a preventive culture.

Hamad Barkal underlined the importance of cooperation between government, employers, and workers to achieve a balanced and safe work environment, noting that psychological stability improves productivity and reduces employee turnover.

The conference featured an intensive scientific program with contributions from experts and academics, addressing psychosocial risks, international safety policies, and methods to prevent burnout. It also included presentations of successful national experiences and concluded with a panel discussion on best practices for protecting workers and enhancing their well-being
